Brit Funk Era

Atmosfear Dancing in outer space
Lester J Batchelor

This month’s blog takes us back to 1979 when this British jazz funk band first formed, 4 lads got together with their producer Jerry pike. The band then, were  Lester J Batchelor (keyboardist) Ray Johnson (percussionist) Andy Sojka (guitarist) and Stewart Cawthorn (saxophonist).

Of coarse, I’m talking about ATMOSPHERE, With their music growing quickly, they had other members starting to contribute to the cause.

In 1980 they had Tony Antoniou (singer and guitarist) join the band,  followed by regular support musicians such as Peter Hinds keyboardist (light of the world) Leroy Williams percussionist  (Hi tension) and occasionally Alan Rapoport (Horns) Frank Roccoti, Carol Kenyon and Rick Dejong.

‘Dancing in outer space’ was followed with ‘Motivation’, another great club track. Both did well at the club’s creating another brit funk band to follow.

Sadly at some point there was a major disagreement with Andy Sojka and the original band line up changed. Lester Batchelor left the band just as he penned ‘Xtra Special’ which is still one of my favs to this day.
