My first blog for 2019 kicks off with this cool band called sunfire, the track titled step in the light. It takes me back to the care free days as a soulboy teenager, driving from club to club in my ford Capri.
Sunfire also famous for there even bigger hit young free and single, to name a few from this new york funk band.Written by Rowland Smith and produced by Reggie Lucas and released on Warner brothers records in 1982 this one was always my favourite tbh. Sunfire were a trio band from New York USA, consisting of Raymond Calhoun – Reggie Lucas – Rowland Smith. All of which were competent musicians, Reggie was a songwriter and record producer.
He produced nearly all of Madonna’s 1983 self titled album, he also did production for percussionist mtume. Going back to the 70s Reggie worked with miles Davis electric band billy Paul , Roberta Flack, Stephanie Mills, Lou Rawls, Phillis Hyman, The Spinners, Randy Crawford, and The Four Tops to name a few.
Sunfire had a very short career they only managed to release the 1 album, with some memorable tracks on it . Moving on to 1986 Reggie Lucas founded the Jersey City recording studio Quantum Sound. Where the likes of Jodeci the Petshop Boys Jeff Buckley all have rehearsed.
Sadly Reggie passed away on the 19th may 2018 aged just 65. As they say, always too soon… But we are truly thankful for the legacy he has left us to enjoy forever more.
